Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive method of performing hernia surgery. Doctors recommend this method over the open inguinal hernia mesh repair. Both methods will use a man made mesh material to reinforce the muscle around the repaired area; however, the laparoscopy method will require much smaller incisions and provide for a less painful and faster recovery.
While both methods are performed in a couple of hours and allow a patient to leave the hospital the same day, the open inguinal method requires a larger incision has a much more incapacitating recovery period. The open inguinal method is a better fit for patients that cannot undergo general anesthesia due to other medical conditions.
In recent months there has been controversy surrounding the use of mesh to repair hernia due to the life-threatening defect of some Kugel Mesh Patches. Doctors seem to be more confident in the products now though as they have been reengineered. The defective patches posed a risk of bowel perforation and fistula due to the lack of structural integrity associated with the expansion ring.
The problem patches have all been pulled from the market and replacement patches are available for those fitted with defective patches. The patch maker Davol urges people who may have received these patches to seek medical attention if any symptom of a complication arises, such as tenderness to the area.
With its less persistent recovery period the laparoscopy method will surely be the method of the future chosen by both patients and physicians alike.
