Just because the Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch was recalled well over a year ago doesn't mean that all of the injuries associated with the defective patches have already occured. The defective patches have memory recoil rings that could be on the brink of breakage. When the initial recall was introduced doctors had to weigh the risks of removing the patch or leaving it in and taking the chance that the ring could break causing serious injury. In many cases the risk of removing the patch outweighed the possibilty of patch failure.
This weighing of these dangers can be very dangerous in itself. Sure a patient could have a Kugel Patch and never have any complications, as not every patch will have ring breakage, but a patient could start to experience pain 10 years down the road and really have no clue that it could be the defective patch. This could cause a person to not react to a life threatening injury before it is too late. The FDA is still recieving reports of incidents now almost two years after the initial recall.
If you have had hernia surgery over the past few years odd are you have been fittled with some type of mesh patch and you should be aware tenderness or pain in the area of your surgery could be a sign of serious injury.
