Kugel Hernia Mesh Patches are used for the repair of hernias that are caused by thinning or stretching of scar tissues that form following hernia surgery.
The folded patch is placed inside the incision and then held open by a plastic "memory coil ring" once in place. There have been reports that this ring can break and create a number of health problems for patients.
The hernia patch was recalled due to these reports. Should the ring break, the broken end can poke through the mesh and create a bowel perforation and or condition known as "chronic enteric fistulae." The ring was designed to aid the deployment of the patch, but it can break from increased stress placed on it during surgical placement techniques.
According to the recall notice "patients that have a Composix Kugel Mesh Patch should seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms associated with the ring breakage. Symptoms include: unexplained or persistent abdominal pain, fever and tenderness at the surgery site or other unusual symptoms that don't feel normal.
