The Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch was created to repair ventral hernias. The Patch was to be placed behind the hernia surgery and then held open by a "memory recoil ring." It is this memory coil ring that caused the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh patch recall.

The ring apparently has the tendancy to break which can cause bowel perforations or chronic intestinal fistulae. Thus Davol and the FDA recalled the patch asking surgeons and hospital to cease using it.

In December 2005, the patch was officially recalled by Davol, Inc, the company that manufactured it. Soon after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began warning about the mesh patch and into 2006 noted more recalled lot numbers.
